All About Mrs. Miller

A little about me (as a teacher):

I studied at Hope College, where I majored in elementary education and psychology.  I received my Master in Reading at Western Michigan University. I taught in both Allegan Public Schools and then Mattawan Consolidated Schools for seven years.  Ten years ago, Mr. Miller and I moved to East Grand Rapids from Kalamazoo and instead of teaching, I was a full-time mom at home. I returned to teaching three years ago at Wealthy Elementary School.

A little about my family (as a mom):
  • Our 5th grade Lakeside Lion, Anabel, loves to play tennis, go backpacking and read, read, read.
  • Our 3rd grade Lakeside Lion, Olivia, loves to swim, go backpacking, read, and dance-and-read (at the same time).
  • My husband, Brian Miller, works at Davenport University and is also one of the City Commissioners for our city.  He loves to camp,  geo-cache with Anabel and Liv and act very goofy to make us all laugh.
  • We have TWO cats now.  Our older cat, Cookie, is a crazy Siamese cat (did you ever read Skippy Jon Jones?  That's him!).  He loves to raid the hats & socks bins, especially when we aren't home.  We will come home to a random mitten on the bed or a winter hat by the back door.  Our newest addition, Cosmo, is a black cat from the Humane Society.  We adopted him this summer.  He has the longest legs and piercing yellow eyes.  He loves to take Anabel's balls of yarn (she likes to finger knit) and bring it all over the house.  Remind me to tell you a true story that involves a cat, a turtle and the kitchen floor sometime.
  • Anabel's two red-bellied toads, Slime and Buster, are pretty cool looking with their bright red bellies and green backs.  They eat 3-4 live crickets a day, right out of Anabel's hand!

A little about me (as myself):

I love to...be with my family, TEACH amazing kids like you, read, go outside, collect rocks, read picture books/chapter books to my girls (and to my students!!), camp/backpack, kayak, be outside, swim (I swam on the swim team in high school and in college), watch movies, be with friends and family, go to Jersey Junction, be outside, eat s'mores, have campfires, travel to new places, visit Tennessee where I lived for many years as a kid (my dad was in the Army for 21 years) and BE OUTSIDE!

Here are some of our favorite places we've been outside...have you been to any of these?!

Red River Gorge, Kentucky (sandstone rock climbing)

Nordhouse Dunes, Michigan (backpacking in the forest dunes)

Badlands, South Dakota (sedimentary layers of rock & tons of fossils)

Bay of Fundy, Nova Scotia, Canada (biggest tides in the world)

Glacier National Park, Montana (some of the only glaciers in the US)
